Welcome to 52 Friends. A newsletter written by me, Miriam Amdur. ✍

I explore friendship and share my observations of the human condition. Subscribe to read :)

Hey Friend,

I’m Miriam, a writer from Toronto, Canada but more notably, an observer of the human condition. You may be familiar with my work because I once made it my goal to connect or reconnect with 52 Friends over the course of a year. It was my version of Eat, Pray, Love—a way out of a period of loneliness.

Throughout that year, I shared jokes with my high school history teacher, Mr. Shaw, visited my friend Davida in Dallas, Texas and met many new friends like Lilian and Violette. I also garnered some media attention allowing me to advocate for the prioritization of friendship and raise awareness of the stigma surrounding loneliness.

What is this newsletter?

  1. I am currently working on my debut novel, titled The Salad Days. It will be my exploration of friendships, relationships and other musings. In the meantime, I write updates and share sneak peeks of the book.

  2. I document ideas based on my experiences and interview notable experts on friendship and loneliness.

(Above: Me.)

I sometimes also feel like I’m a mix of Carrie Bradshaw and Charlotte York’s characters.

Where else can I find you?

You can follow me on Instagram @52.Friends

Thinking of reaching out to an old friend?

Do it! The American Psychology Association found that receiving a message from an old friend can lead to feelings of surprise and appreciation.

I’ve thought of some non-awkward ways to reconnect.

  1. Send a quick text and ask to get coffee

  2. Invite them to an event

  3. Slide into their DMs

  4. Get together with mutual friends

  5. Share a memory

“The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love — whether we call it friendship or family or romance — is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other's light.”

—James Baldwin
